Grey Line Log

Shortwave listening from a fourth-floor flat with a wire along the balcony rail.

Who writes here

I listen to shortwave radio from a flat on the fourth floor of a concrete block, which is the worst place to do it short of a basement. The antenna is twelve metres of thin wire run along the balcony rail and up a drainpipe, with a small matching transformer at the window and a receiver on the kitchen table. Nothing here is impressive, which is the point: I wanted to know how much there is to hear with almost nothing.

The log on these pages is what I heard, when, on what frequency and how well, in UTC. I also write about propagation, because the ionosphere decides more than the equipment does, and about the slow war against the electrical noise that a modern building produces. Everything here was heard from the same table.
